The Fruit Fly Starter Kit comes with one container of fruit flies, one container of additional Fruit Fly Mix, 2 empty containers with drilled lids and screen and excelsior. Making your own flies is very easy to do. All the directions are on the containers and some are below.
1. Place 1/3 cup of the mix into an empty container. You can use the ones that come with the kit or clean and sterile mason, spaghetti, yogurt or peanut butter containers. Sterilize by boiling the container for at least 5 minutes.
2. Then add 1/2 cup of HOT water. Swirl to mix completely. If
you see dry parts on the bottom, that's ok! 3. Wait to cool and add your flies. If you want to add the excelsior at this time you can OR you can wait until larval development. 4. Depending on temperatures, you should be ready to feed out your new culture in 5-7 days. Optimal temp is 78o. |
